Kenfig Burrows aka Sker Beach

Kenfig Burrows are popular with locals but do not get the attention they deserve. It is a beautiful, clean and tranquil place, with plenty of room to spread out for those who wish to be alone, or larger areas for those who want to socialise. It can be reached at any time, – access being gained from the landward side – and there is no hurry to leave because the shingle prevents the sea from cutting you off at high tide. In ‘Free Sun’ the beach was described as “an excellent beach and huge area [of] unfrequented sand dunes”. The beach is in easy reach of B&B’s, campsites etc etc.

Note that swimming conditions may be dangerous – especially near the river. As always, local information should be sought before risking life and limb.

Great nature reserve and beach for walking
    Jul 2021
Found Sker Beach which can be reached by walking from Porthcawl beaches or parking at Kenfig Reserve. The walk from the reserve is through the burrows and dunes. The walk through to the beach is a good trek of at least 1 mile. There are good facilities at the Reserve open during office hours – access to a toilet, a really nice coffee cart serving great coffee and cakes. The beach itself has a gentle slope and is clean. The top of the beach is pebbles covered in plenty of drift wood, which makes fun for building shelters as an activity. The beach is popular with walkers, dog walkers and horse riders. The walk towards Port Talbot is probably 3 miles, so such much beach it feels deserted. Plenty of shelter in the dune areas, or on top of the pebble areas for reflection, reading a book or soaking up the sun! As you walk north towards Port Talbot you will come across the ship wreck. This area is used by a few naturist couples and men. Very discrete as the beach is so deep that nobody seems to bother each other. Just one to be aware of. We enjoyed time walking and then relaxing with a good book. A beach which is quiet, has a lot to offer and in today’s world pretty clean. The true test, will we return? Yes
